A house starts with a hole in the right place at the right depth. We set the dig off the plan and strip the topsoil first. Then we cut down to footing grade and leave room for the wall forms.
Footings go below the frost line, at the depth your township's code sets. Winters here are cold enough that the frost line sits deep. We dig the footing trenches clean so the forms sit on solid ground.
A basement dig makes a lot of dirt. We keep what we need for backfill and move the rest off the site. Once the walls are up and the foundation contractor is done, we backfill in lifts and compact as we go.
Every building needs lines run to it. We trench for water lines, electric conduit and drain lines, and for sleeves under a slab. Each trench gets dug to the depth the utility or the code calls for. Then the pipe is bedded and the trench is backfilled.
We call the locates in before the bucket touches the ground. Pennsylvania jobs go through PA One Call. The law asks for that call at least three business days ahead, and not more than ten. Across the river we call New Jersey One Call or Dig Safely New York.
Older lines come up often on these properties. Water services and sewer laterals get replaced by open trench when they fail. A broken or collapsed line out in the yard is handled as sewer line repair. We put the ground back and grade the trench line smooth once the pipe is in.
Rock shows up fast on Pocono plateau lots. Shallow sandstone and shale ledge, glacial till and buried boulders are normal ground here. We break ledge with a hammer on the excavator and pull the broken rock out. Clean rock can often stay on the site and go back in as fill.
Backfill decides how the ground sits for years. We put it back in lifts and compact each lift instead of pushing it all in at once. That keeps the ground from settling against a wall or over a new pipe.
Commercial site excavation runs the same way, with more dirt to move. We cut and fill the building area, dig the footings and pits, and trench the utilities. Larger jobs in Pike County get an erosion and sediment control review through the Pike County Conservation District. We dig to the plan that is approved.

We dig the soil test pits. The township sewage enforcement officer runs the probes and the percolation tests, and approves the design. In New Jersey and New York, the county health department issues the permit.
Once the permit is issued, we set the tank and run the lines to the distribution box. Then we build the absorption area to the approved design. Conventional in-ground beds and elevated sand mounds are both common on lots around here.
The system gets inspected before anything is covered. In Pennsylvania the township sewage enforcement officer does that inspection. Then we backfill, grade the ground back out and clean up the site.
